Rebels ready to ride with Mackey

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said it's not rocket science to figure out who to play at quarterback.

Randall Mackey is Ole Miss' starter going forward, and he's the third different quarterback to start for the Rebels this season.

"It's just a gut feeling," Nutt said. "You've got tohave that guy who puts your team in the end zone, and that's what you go by.'

The Rebels opened the season with West Virginia transfer Barry Brunetti as the starter. After that, it was junior college transfer Zack Stoudt. But Mackey is coming off an impressive performance in the 38-28 win at Fresno State and seems to be the best fit with where the Rebels are right now offensively.

"Barry Brunetti, who's going to be a good quarterback, lost two running backs, and when you lose your running game, that's a quarterback's best friend," Nutt said. "The guy that gave us the best chance as a pure passer was Zack Stoudt, and then protection problems hurt him.

"Randall gives us the fit for both worlds -- run and pass, his escapability and not taking sacks -- and that's where we are."
