Vols' Rogers putting up All-SEC numbers

11/23/2011

Tennessee sophomore receiver Da'Rick Rogers lost his complement on the other side of the field when Justin Hunter went down the third week of the season with a knee injury.

Two games later, Rogers lost his quarterback when Tyler Bray broke his thumb.

And for a while, it looked like Rogers might lose his edge.

But he's come back strong in the Vols' last few games and enters the regular-season finale against Kentucky with All-SEC numbers.

Rogers leads the SEC with 65 catches and is tied with Arkansas' Jarius Wright for the league lead in receiving yards (1,002). Rogers is also second with nine touchdown catches. He has a chance to become only the third player in Tennessee history to catch 10 touchdown passes and record 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Robert Meachem did it in 2006, and Marcus Nash did it in 1997.

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said Rogers has done a nice job of rolling with all the changes this season.

"It was tough on him because he was in one role and then we had to kind of change his role, and for a couple of games, he kind of struggled at it," Dooley said. "And then on top of that, he’s had three quarterbacks and that’s not easy. To put up the kind of numbers that he’s put up, given the fact that his role changed in some ways and given the fact that he’s done it with three different quarterbacks, I think it says a lot about the way he’s performed on the field."
