Nobody has ever accused the SEC of being full of offensive juggernauts, but the NCAA statistics heading into this week's conference championship games suggest there's been some serious defense played in the SEC this season.

Four of the top five teams nationally in total defense are from the SEC -- 1. Alabama, 2. LSU, 4. South Carolina and 5. Georgia. Florida is No. 10, giving the SEC six of the top 10 defenses in college football in terms of yards allowed.

In scoring defense, Alabama is No. 1, LSU No. 2 and Georgia No. 10. South Carolina is No. 13 and Mississippi State No. 20. All five are holding opponents to under 20 points per game.

Nine of the 12 SEC schools rank in the top 50 in scoring defense. Florida is No. 26, Vanderbilt No. 29, Tennessee No. 38 and Arkansas No. 40.
