SEC closes season on top

1/10/2012

Not that it should come as anybody's surprise, but the SEC finished atop ESPN's Stats & Info's Conference Power Rankings this season after winning its sixth straight BCS national championship on Monday night.

The streak of national titles is one thing, but the SEC also produced three of the top 5 teams in both of the final polls. Alabama was No. 1, LSU No. 2 and Arkansas No. 5 in the Associated Press and USA Today coaches' Top 25 polls. It's the first time since 1961 that three SEC teams have finished the season ranked in the top 5 of the AP poll. Alabama was No. 1 in 1961, LSU No. 4 and Ole Miss No. 5.

The SEC finished with a final rating of 96.5. The Big 12 was second with a rating of 91, while the Pac-12 was third with a rating of 76.6.

The SEC went 6-3 during the bowl season and placed four teams in the top 10 of the final polls. South Carolina was No. 8 in the coaches' poll and No. 9 in the AP poll.
