ATHENS, Ga. -- LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis was hatless at the end of Saturday’s 20-13 win over Georgia.
For that matter, so was LSU coach Les Miles.
In a tradition that started for Chavis when he was at Tennessee, he tossed his hat into the stands at Sanford Stadium before leaving the field. He’s done it after every win here since Tennessee won in 1992.
“Coach (Phillip) Fulmer started it. We started it together,” explained Chavis, who was Fulmer’s defensive coordinator for 14 years at Tennessee. “We came down here and got our first (SEC road) win. It’s been so long ago that I can’t remember.”
What he does remember is how many hats he’s left between the hedges.
“I respect this program. It’s a great program, but I’ve left seven hats here,” Chavis beamed.
In fact, since that 1992 game, Chavis is 7-3 at Sanford Stadium.
“Chavis told me that’s what you do here, once you win, you throw your hat into the crowd,” joked Miles, who’s been dubbed the “Mad Hatter” for the way he wears his hat. “I figured I haven’t been here before. I guess that’s what everybody does, so I threw my hat into the crowd and I went and got another hat so I could come to (the press conference).”
