T-shirt shop has SEC geographical goof

Everyone makes mistakes. I do. You do. No one is perfect.

But sometimes mistakes are magnified, and that's what College Station, Texas, T-shirt shop Aggieland Outfitters is dealing with right now.

The store recalled a handful of T-shirts on Tuesday after being ridiculed for having a geographical mistake in the way it constructed the states associated with the SEC. The maroon shirt, created for Texas A&M fans, has an SEC logo in the center of a mapped section of the SEC that includes the state of North Carolina.

Yes, UNC was mentioned when original talks of SEC expansion began, but the Tar Heels weren't one of the two new members that eventually joined. Missouri and Texas A&M were.

Aggieland Outfitters issued an apology on its website, stating the shirt was supposed to "reflect the SEC states before expansion on the front, and then refer to the addition of a 'Texas style of football' on the back." Because the shirt was indeed made for Aggies fans, the omission of the state of Missouri was on purpose but the addition of North Carolina wasn't.

Texas A&M had nothing to do with the printing of the shirts.

Aggieland Outfitters marketing director, Dallas Shipp, said only "a few dozen" shirts were printed, but that they were removed from store shelves and the company's website. He also said the original design didn't have the state of North Carolina on it, but the shirt's artist accidentally added it by mistake.

Here's the full apology Aggieland Outfitters issued on its website:

“We would like to apologize for a t-shirt that has come under fire for its inaccuracies. Many members of the media, especially those connected to other schools in Texas, have insinuated that Texas A&M made these shirts, and that Texas A&M doesn’t know geography. That’s simply not true. Aggieland Outfitters designed the shirt and simply made a mistake.

"The shirt was originally designed to reflect the SEC states before expansion on the front, and then refer to the addition of a “Texas style of football” on the back. The original sketch did not have North Carolina on it, but when an artist drew the map, it was added by mistake.

"Texas and Missouri were never part of the design, as it was supposed to be a nod to the original 12 members of the SEC.

"The shirts have been pulled from the stores and website, and we’ve addressed the issue internally. We have also put several measures into place to make sure that this sort of error does not happen again.

"While it was a simple error, our biggest concern is that Texas A&M is associated with it, and that was never our intention. We strive to be the No. 1 retailer of Texas A&M merchandise, and will continue to design and sell the best possible selection for Aggies and A&M fans everywhere.
