Replay pretty clear on missed call

Let me preface everything by saying I'm not a conspiracy theorist, and I agree with SEC commissioner Mike Slive that the SEC officials are some of the best in the business.

That said, Mississippi State was jobbed last Saturday in its 31-24 loss to Houston.

Kyle Veazey of The Jackson Clarion-Ledger has a frame-by-frame look on his blog of the controversial fourth-down play where quarterback Tyson Lee was ruled to be across the line of scrimmage. Lee completed the pass to Leon Berry, which would have given the Bulldogs a first down at the Houston 4-yard line with just over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. Mississippi State was leading 17-14 at the time.

Listen, calls are missed all the time. We're all human. But this play wasn't even reviewed, and to be fair, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen didn't call timeout and challenge the call.

But how the replay official didn't buzz down to the crew on the field and tell them he was going to review the call, especially coming on a change-of-possession play, is the real mystery here. The replay official was from the SEC. The crew of officials on the field was a mix from Conference USA, the WAC and Mountain West.

Rogers Redding, the SEC's coordinator of officials, told the Clarion-Ledger through a spokesman that it wouldn't have been possible to overturn the call on the field based on the video evidence that he'd seen. He did say the call probably should have been reviewed.

Again, check out Veazey's blog. To me, that's all the indisputable evidence you need. Perhaps there's another view somewhere that isn't as clear-cut. I don't know. What I do know is that every game has to be treated the same.

If this had been the SEC Championship Game, would that play have been reviewed? Had it been the Florida-LSU game the other night, would it have been reviewed?

I'll let you make up your own mind.
