South Carolina put itself squarely on that 6-6 bubble Saturday with its 33-16 loss at Arkansas.

The Hogs, on the other hand, put themselves in position to finish the season with a flurry. They moved to 5-4, one win away from becoming bowl eligible, and face Troy and Mississippi State the next two weeks at home. They close the regular season at LSU.

The Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4) face a tough road if they’re going to have a winning regular season. They get Florida at home next week and then close the season at home against Clemson on Nov. 28.

In each of the last two seasons, South Carolina has collapsed down the stretch. This would make it three in a row.

Mistakes continue to haunt the Gamecocks. Quarterback Stephen Garcia threw just one interception, but it came in the end zone in the third quarter when Jerrell Norton out-wrestled Alshon Jeffery for the ball.

It was all Arkansas after that, while the Gamecocks continued to self-destruct. On South Carolina’s next offensive possession, Garcia allowed a shotgun snap, albeit one that was a bit high, go through his hands, and the Hogs were able to recover it in the end zone for a safety.

Garcia had a chance to get on the ball, but couldn’t.

That’s sort of been the story for the Gamecocks the last few years when they get to this point in the season.
