The USA Today published a report Tuesday on coaches’ salaries. And to nobody's surprise, there are a few guys in the SEC pocketing some serious coin.
Nine of the 12 head coaches make at least $2 million per year, and four make at least $3 million per year.
A little more than 10 years ago, there were only two head coaches in the SEC making $1 million or more -- Steve Spurrier at Florida and Phillip Fulmer at Tennessee.
Well, Fulmer was fired last season at Tennessee, and Spurrier is now at South Carolina, where he’s the eighth highest-paid coach in the league.
Here are the current SEC salaries, according to USA Today:
Urban Meyer: $4,000,000 (base $250,000) -- record: 9-0
Nick Saban: $3,900,000 (base $225,000) -- record: 9-0
Les Miles: $3,751,000 (base $300,000) -- record: 7-2
Mark Richt: $3,096,576 (base $809,340) -- record: 5-4
Bobby Petrino: $2,858,000 (base $1,900,000) -- record: 5-4
Houston Nutt: $2,509,000 (base $200,000) -- record: 6-3
Gene Chizik: $2,050,000 (base $500,000) -- record 7-3
Steve Spurrier: $2,031,500 (base $507,500) -- record 6-4
Lane Kiffin: $2,000,000 (base $350,000) -- record 5-4
Rich Brooks: $1,617,517 (base $400,000) -- record 5-4
Dan Mullen: $1,200,000 (base $250,000) -- record 4-5
The salary for Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson was not available because Vanderbilt is a private school and under no obligation to make those numbers available. However, based on talks with several officials at Vanderbilt, it’s safe to say that Johnson makes in the $1 million range per year.
