Of the two Heisman Trophy candidates in the SEC, Mark Ingram made the strongest case Saturday.
With Alabama continuing to win and Ingram running up big numbers, he heads into these final few weeks as perhaps the guy to beat.
Remarkably, Alabama’s never had a Heisman Trophy winner. We may well be seeing the first.
Ingram rushed for 149 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown, in the 31-3 win over Mississippi State and now has 1,297 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns on the season.
Once again, he was a beast after contact and also has two more chances on national television to impress the voters. The Auburn game on Nov. 27 (the Friday after Thanksgiving) and the SEC championship game are both on CBS.
At this point, it looks like Florida quarterback Tim Tebow will need a huge finish to the season to put himself back in the picture. But that’s possible.
If he has the kind of performance he did a year ago in the SEC championship game and the Gators win, he could win a lot of late votes.
Either way, it looks like the SEC championship game is going to play a significant role in who wins the Heisman.
