Gamecocks improve bowl outlook

South Carolina put itself squarely in the Chick-fil-A Bowl equation with its 34-17 rout of No. 15 Clemson on Saturday.

The Gamecocks (7-5, 3-5) haven't played in the Atlanta bowl since 1969 when it was then called the Peach Bowl.

Wherever the Gamecocks go in the postseason, they do so in a much better frame of mind than a year ago when several of the South Carolina upperclassmen had all but mailed it in.

The win over Clemson qualifies as South Carolina's most complete game of the season, especially the way the Gamecocks shut down C.J. Spiller after he returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

Ellis Johnson's defense has hung in there all season despite a glut of injuries and a lot of youth. To hold Clemson to 260 yards of total offense is a great way to go into bowl practice and the offseason.

It's a defense that should be even better next season when you look at everybody who's eligible to come back.

The Gamecocks went into the Clemson game ranked third in the SEC in total defense, so it's obvious that the future is bright in Columbia.
