Several bowl officials have told me that the whole bowl process this year has been one of the most muddled in the past decade.
Nothing will be finalized until this weekend, but here's a look at where we are at this point, keeping in mind that a few things could change depending on what happens in the ACC championship game:
Nothing will be finalized until this weekend, but here's a look at where we are at this point, keeping in mind that a few things could change depending on what happens in the ACC championship game:
- The winner of the Alabama-Florida game is going to the BCS National Championship Game, and the loser is headed to the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
- LSU is ticketed for the Capital One Bowl against either Iowa or Penn State.
- Ole Miss will make a return trip to the AT&T Cotton Bowl and will face Oklahoma State.
- The Outback Bowl looked at a couple of different scenarios, including Kentucky and Tennessee, but decided to go with Auburn, the first time a Western Division team has played in Tampa since 1996. Auburn will face Wisconsin or Northwestern.
- The Chick-fil-A Bowl is waiting on the ACC championship game before finalizing its decision. A Tennessee-Virginia Tech matchup is very likely. But if Clemson loses to Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game, the Chick-fil-A Bowl could wind up matching Georgia against Clemson.
- Kentucky appears to be headed to the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl for the third time in the past four years and will face North Carolina or Miami.
- Arkansas is set to face the winner of the Conference USA championship game between Houston and East Carolina in the Autozone Liberty Bowl.
- If Georgia doesn't land in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, it looks like the Bulldogs are headed to the Advocare Independence Bowl to face a Big 12 team, possibly Texas A&M.
- South Carolina will spend its holidays in Birmingham and play in the Papajohns.com Bowl against a Big East team, likely Connecticut or South Florida.
