The computers are working against Florida right now.
The Gators (5-1, 3-1 SEC) were No. 10 in the first BCS standings, and they had the worst computer average of any of the top 12 teams. That's despite being No. 6 in the Harris poll and No. 7 in the coaches' poll.
Unlike Georgia, Florida doesn't have a bunch of heavyweights left on its schedule. The Gators have Kentucky at home this Saturday and then the showdown with Georgia in Jacksonville on Nov. 1.
Florida would benefit by Georgia beating LSU this weekend so that the Bulldogs come into the Nov. 1 game ranked solidly in the Top 10. Wins over Top 10 teams always carry extra weight with the voters.
The Gators would then need to take care of business pretty easily (again, not giving the pollsters a reason to vote them down) against Vanderbilt, South Carolina, The Citadel and Florida State.
Florida could really get a boost if Florida State continues to win and comes into that regular-season finale ranked pretty highly. A win over the Seminoles on the road would gain the Gators even more mileage with the voters entering the SEC Championship Game.
So in other words, Florida fans should root for Florida State, as hard as that may be.
In the SEC Championship Game, the best scenario for Florida would be to knock off an unbeaten Alabama team that's ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the country.
The Gators are going to shoot up in the polls if they continue to win, especially if they keep rolling up big offensive numbers.
Like Georgia, they're still probably going to need Penn State to lose somewhere, preferably this Saturday at Ohio State. The Big 12 teams should knock each other off enough for Florida to pass most of them assuming the Gators are 12-1 and the SEC champions.
The odds are against Oklahoma sliding up into the one of the top two spots if the Sooners don't play in the Big 12 Championship Game. Georgia found that out the hard way a year ago.
You also wonder about Ohio State. If the Buckeyes were to finish 11-1 (which would include the win over Penn State), is it possible they could finish ahead of Florida?
Let's say Texas is unbeaten and locked in at No. 1 in the final BCS standings, with 12-1 Florida, 11-1 Southern California and 11-1 Ohio State all sitting there clamoring for No. 2.
Hold on tight, because that could get interesting.
