Vanderbilt finalizing deal with Derek Mason

Multiple reports have Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason in line to be Vanderbilt's next head football coach.

Mason has been at Stanford since 2010 when he coached the Cardinal's defensive backs and was later promoted to defensive coordinator. The Commodores also had considered Indianapolis Colts assistant Pep Hamilton and Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris.

Mason, with his Stanford ties, makes a lot of sense. Vanderbilt, having won nine games each of the last two years under former coach James Franklin, would love to be able to make that jump to a national contender similar to what Stanford has done in the Pac-12.
