Members of the 1974 Vanderbilt team gathered on campus last Saturday and were honored at halftime of the LSU-Vanderbilt basketball game.
It remains one of the more memorable Vanderbilt teams in modern times. The Commodores went to the Peach Bowl that season and tied Texas Tech 6-6.
Steve Sloan, only 28 when he was named head coach, was in his second season at Vanderbilt in 1974, and the staff he assembled was impressive to say the least.
Rex Dockery, who was killed in a plane crash in 1983 while then the head coach at Memphis State, was a member of the Commodores' offensive staff, and none other than Bill Parcells was the defensive coordinator. George MacIntyre, who would later become the Vanderbilt head coach, coached the defensive backs on that 1974 club.
The team captain and quarterback was David Lee, who's now on the Miami Dolphins' staff.
Sloan attended the ceremony last Saturday, and the 1974 team joined the first Vanderbilt bowl team (the 1955 Gator Bowl squad) to endow a scholarship for Vanderbilt athletics.
