Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson shook things up a little bit and went with redshirt freshman Larry Smith as his starting quarterback Wednesday in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.
It was Smith's first start of his career, although he played extensively in the regular-season finale against Wake Forest. Johnson said it was a game-time decision to start Smith, who's probably the Commodores' strongest passer.
Even though Smith started, fifth-year senior Chris Nickson entered the game on Vanderbilt's first possession, which resulted in a 42-yard field goal and 3-0 lead over Boston College.
There's also a chance that junior quarterback Mackenzi Adams could see action for Vanderbilt. Adams has been nursing a couple of different injuries.
