Chizik could pocket $1.3 million in bonuses

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – When you look at where Auburn’s Gene Chizik currently ranks among SEC head coaches in terms of salary, the Tigers are getting one of the best bargains in all of college football.

That’s about to change in more ways than one.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs told ESPN.com on Friday that Chizik’s deal would be sweetened considerably going into next season.

“We’ll sit down sometime after Monday night and get that done,” Jacobs said. “Everybody has been able to see what he’s been able to do, not only on the field, but with these players.”

Chizik earned $2.1 million this season in base salary, which places him in the bottom third of the SEC.

With Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen recently receiving a raise that takes him to $2.65 million annually, eight of the SEC’s 12 head coaches make $2.5 million or more.

Where Chizik really stands to cash in this season is with incentive bonuses. If Auburn beats Oregon on Monday in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game, Chizik will receive $1.3 million in bonuses.

“I’ll gladly pay those bonuses every time, brother,” Jacobs said.
