Vanderbilt's defensive staff taking shape
By ESPN.com staff
First-year Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is waiting to announce his entire defensive staff at once, but it appears he already has two of the biggest pieces in place.
William & Mary defensive coordinator Bob Shoop has resigned his position there and agreed to become the Commodores' next defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports.
Shoop, 44, has been at William & Mary the past four seasons, taking a defense that was near the bottom of all the statistics nationally when he got there to a defense that was ranked sixth last season among FCS teams in scoring defense (16.6 points per game).
Georgia Southern defensive coordinator Brent Pry is set to join Shoop and serve as the Commodores' co-defensive coordinator. Pry was the defensive line coach at Memphis before spending last season as Georgia Southern's defensive chief. The Eagles ranked ninth nationally among FCS teams in total defense (286.9 yards per game) and 11th in scoring defense (18.4 points per game). Pry was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette prior to his Memphis stint.
