Vanderbilt announces 2011 signing class
By Chris Low
Vanderbilt has announced James Franklin's first signing class, which includes 21 players.
Franklin said he especially likes the blend of athletes in this class, giving the Commodores some options on both offense and defense. One of those guys is tight end/defensive end Dillon van der Wal. He's ranked by ESPN as the No. 57 tight end in the country and backed out of his earlier commitment to Arizona State to sign with Vanderbilt.
The Commodores were able to get a couple of players away from other schools late in the process, including quarterback Lafonte Thourogood (from Virginia Tech) and defensive lineman Barron Dixon (from Mississippi State).
Franklin signed three quarterbacks in this class. In addition to Thourogood, Josh Grady of Tampa, Fla., and Kris Kentera of Colorado Springs, Colo., will start out as quarterbacks.
