Nutt would like to redshirt Barry Brunetti

By Edward Aschoff

The Barry Brunetti experiment at Ole Miss could be coming to an end for this season.

During Wednesday’s SEC coaches call, the Rebels’ Houston Nutt said that he would like to redshirt the West Virginia transfer quarterback, but isn’t sure if that’s a possibility with the snaps he’s taken this season.

Brunetti held the lead at the quarterback position exiting spring ball and carried that lead all the way into the opener against BYU. However, Brunetti was benched against the Cougars after attempting just four passes and carrying the ball three times.

He hasn’t seen the field since with junior college transfer Zack Stoudt taking over as the starter and junior Randall Mackey getting some snaps after serving a one-game suspension. Stoudt has thrown for 397 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions this season.

Mackey suffered a thigh bruise in last week’s 30-7 loss to Vanderbilt and Nutt hopes to get him back Saturday at Georgia.

As for Brunetti, while Nutt would like to sit him for the rest of the season, he said that Brunetti has improved in practice and is still in the mix to get playing time, but Nutt wants to make sure he has the best scenario on the field to get this team a win.

“He’s had such a tremendous attitude and working really hard,” Nutt said. “He’s actually gotten back in the mix a little bit because of the Mackey situation.

“Boy, he’s done an excellent job of practicing and working hard. Even against our first-team defense, throwing balls against our secondary, things like that. He’s done an awesome job.”
