Monday chat wrap

By Edward Aschoff

We had another successful Monday chat. Here's the wrap from today, and here's a preview for all of you still too stuffed from Thanksgiving to turn your computer on this morning:

Scratches (D'ham, NC)
How much does losing Kenny Bell hurt the Crimson Tide vs. UGA?

Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
He is probably Alabama's best deep threat, so not having him will hurt that passing game. Amari Cooper has been a stud all year and Alabama still has Kevin Norwood and Christion Jones. I think it means more rushing for Alabama. And Georgia's rush defense has struggled at times this season.

Matt (Atlanta)
Serious question -- why do you writers say "SEC" vs ND? It makes it seem like the SEC Conference All Stars from all 14 schools are taking the field vs one team, Notre Dame. Is there a reason for it? Just wondering why you guys cant just say a team name, like, Alabama...or...Georgia.

Edward Aschoff (12:05 PM)
Because the SEC champ hasn't been determined yet ...

Rich (Athens)
I personally hate the way the bowl selection process works. In 05 we beat #3 lsu in seccg. They fell all the way to chick fil a bowl while lower ranked teams like florida, auburn, usc went to better bowls. Now the experts are saying the same could happen to us. We lose to bama and fall to chick fil a bowl while uf, tamu, lsu, etc go to better bowls. I dont see the logic behind basically penalizing one team each yr for winning their division and playing an extra game.

Edward Aschoff (12:08 PM)
Well I don't think Georgia will fall to the Chick-fil-A if it loses to Alabama. I don't see how the Capital One could pass on either Alabama or Georgia. I think the Cotton goes with the Aggies and the Outback goes LSU. Then you have the situation with the Chick-fil-A Bowl because I don't think it wants another South Carolina-Clemson matchup. Maybe Vandy sneaks in. Also, no way the Sugar passes on 11-1 Florida with four wins over top-10 teams.

Matt (Winston-Salem)
Is Matt Jones that good, or did he benefit from a worn FSU D?

Edward Aschoff (12:09 PM)
I think he's talented and has a lot of potential, but that FSU defense was drained at the end of the game. Still, he had some really nice runs in that game. Future looks bright at RB for the Gators.

Matthew (ATL)
Speaking in the hypothetical, if ND had lost to USC, how likely do you think it would have been for Florida to end up in the BCS Championship game? And since we live in a world of non-hypotheticals, which bowl and opponent will Florida get?

Edward Aschoff (12:10 PM)
Florida would have been in the national championship. The Gators would have been No. 1 in the computers and that would have done enough to make them No. 2 after the SEC championship game. I think the Gators are Sugar Bowl bound because they will still be in the top 4 of the BCS after Saturday. Big 12 runner-up, Big East or Kent State for opponent.

Jon (Tally)
Not that it really matters because it will all get worked out in the SEC championship, but style points aside, is there any reason Bama should be ranked above UF in the BCS? UF has more quality wins, a better loss and beat the team who took down Bama in their in own house.. Seems to me it should be 1) Notre Dame, 2) UGA, 3) UF and 4) Bama.. Correct me if I'm wrong..

Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
You make a good point and I think it's a legitimate gripe for Florida considering it really does have the best resume in college football. Even over Notre Dame. But the Gators turned it over six times against Georgia and lost. They also didn't look great in any game after until this weekend. Voters saw that and it hurt the Gators in the long run.
