SEC recruiting scorecard

By Edward Aschoff

It might be the dead period in the recruiting world, but that won't stop people from being obsessed with the phenomenon that recruiting has become.

The SEC has done very well on the recruiting front, as nine teams are in the top 25 of ESPN's recruiting classes . Florida currently holds the top spot in the class rankings with 25 commitments, including 10 ESPN 150 members.

As we head deeper into bowl season, here's a look at how all 14 SEC teams stand when it comes to building for the future:

ALABAMA

2013 verbal commitments: 20

Spotlight: Yulee, Fla., athlete Derrick Henry is a quality pickup for Alabama. Henry is big, physical and very athletic. He's also very versatile and could play multiple positions at the college level. Chances are that he'll stay at running back, where he broke the national career-rushing yards record during his high school career.

ESPN 150 members: 9 (Henry; DE DeMarcus Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; DE Jonathan Allen of Ashburn, Va.; TE-H of O.J. Howard of Prattville, Ala.; RB Altee Tenpenny of North Little Rock, Ark.; QB-PP Cooper Bateman of Salt Lake City, Utah; RB Tyren Jones of Marietta, Ga.; TE-Y Josh McNeil of Durham, N.C.; CB Maurice Smith of Sugar Land, Texas)

ARKANSAS

2013 verbal commitments: 17

Spotlight: Tight end Hunter Henry of Little Rock, Ark., was a very active member of his high school offense and was used more in the downfield passing game. He isn't the greatest blocker, but he creates mismatches over the middle of the field with his size and speed.

ESPN 150 members: 1 (Henry)

AUBURN

2013 verbal commitments: 13

Spotlight: Auburn might have lost out on top linebacker prospect Reuben Foster when he decommitted earlier this month, but defensive end Carl Lawson of Alpharetta, Ga., is no slouch. He current ranks as the No. 2 defensive end in the country is the No. 2 overall prospect in the country.

ESPN 150 members: 3 (Lawson; DE Tashawn Bower of Somerville, N.J.; DT Dee Liner of Muscle Shoals, Ala.)

FLORIDA

2013 verbal commitments: 25

Spotlight: Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves of Tampa, Fla., is rated the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the country and is currently the No. 3 overall player in the nation. He's one of the more complete players out there and it looks like he'll be able to play right away when he steps on campus. He has great speed and can cover both on and off of the line. He picked off five passes and forced four fumbles this fall.

ESPN 150 members: 10 (Hargreaves; Caleb Brantley of Crescent City, Fla.; RB Kelvin Taylor of Belle Glade, Fla.; OLB Daniel McMillian of Jacksonville, Fla.; WR Ahmad Fulwood of Jacksonville, Fla.; S Nick Washington of Jacksonville, Fla.; S Keanu Neal of Bushnell, Fla.; S Marcell Harris of Orlando, Fla.; ATH Alvin Bailey of Seffner, Fla.; OLB Matt Rolin of Ashburn, Va.)

GEORGIA

2013 verbal commitments: 30

Spotlight: Cornerback Shaq Wiggins of Tyrone, Ga., is a top corner prospects, despite his smaller frame. He might not have elite size, but Wiggins plays like a bigger, more physical defensive back. He has very solid cover skills and is a fast-twitch athlete who can cover a lot of ground.

ESPN 150 members: 4 (Wiggins; ATH Tramel Terry of Goose Creek, S.C.; QB-PP Brice Ramsey of Kingsland, Ga.; S Tray Matthews of Newnan, Ga.)

KENTUCKY

2013 verbal commitments: 14

Spotlight: Defensive end Alvonte Bell of Miramar, Fla., is a bit on the raw side, but appears to have some pretty good speed and potential and should excel with coaching. He could add some weight to his frame, but he has pretty good quickness off the line and has good closing speed.

ESPN 150 members: None

LSU

2013 verbal commitments: 23

Spotlight: Cornerback Jeryl Brazil of Loranger, La., can be used all over the field, but his future is probably at cornerback. He has elite speed and athleticism and is very dangerous when he has the ball in his hands. He could also be used in the return game. He is undersized, but is a big-time playmaker.

ESPN 150 members: 4 (Brazil; OT Ethan Pocic of Lemont, Ill; DT Greg Gilmore of Hope Mills, N.C.; TE-H DeSean Smith of Lake Charles, La.)

MISSISSIPPI STATE

2013 verbal commitments: 21

Spotlight: Defensive end Chris Jones of Houston, Miss., could develop into a trouble-making pass-rusher. He has good size and quickness and flew off the line during his senior year. He has a lot of potential and was raved about during the practices leading up to the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game.

ESPN 150 members: None

MISSOURI

2013 verbal commitments: 18

Spotlight: Athlete Chase Abbington of St. Peters, Mo., is a dynamic player who has the ability to play multiple positions on the field. He has the size to play either wide receiver or tight end, but he'll probably be a running back at the college level. He also plays linebacker, so toughness isn't an issue with Abbington.

ESPN 150 members: None

OLE MISS

2013 verbal commitments: 20

Spotlight: Quarterback Ryan Buchanan of Jackson, Miss., can throw and run well, which is exactly what Hugh Freeze wants in his quarterbacks. He has experience running multiple offensive schemes and has very good awareness when he's in the pocket. He might be able to beat people with his feet, but he prefers to sit in the pocket and make plays.

ESPN 150 members: None

SOUTH CAROLINA

2013 verbal commitments: 19

Spotlight: Quarterback Connor Mitch of Raleigh, N.C., was receiving attention from the South Carolina hype machine well before December. He has been tabbed as the Gamecocks' quarterback of the future and passed for more than 4,700 yards and had 63 touchdown passes during his senior year.

ESPN 150 members: 1 (DT Kelsey Griffin Hoschton, Ga.)

TENNESSEE

2013 verbal commitments: 17

Spotlight: Quarterback Riley Ferguson of Matthews, N.C., has a big-time arm and shows pretty good mobility in the pocket. He also has a lot of confidence in his arm and his throws. He plans on sticking with his Tennessee commitment despite the coaching change, which is huge for the Vols.

ESPN 150 members: None

TEXAS A&M

2013 verbal commitments: 33

Spotlight: ATH Ricky Seals-Jones of Sealy, Texas, was a major get for Kevin Sumlin and his staff. He's an extremely versatile player, and is rated the No. 1 athlete in the country. He has a big frame and can really line up just about everywhere. He's seen time at quarterback, but his future is as a pass-catcher, where he'll create tons of mismatches for defenders in the future.

ESPN 150 members: 6 (Seals-Jones; TE-H Derrick Griffin of Rosenberg, Texas; ATH LaQuvionte Gonzalez of Cedar Hill, Texas; QB Kohl Stewart of Houston, Texas; OG Joas Aguilar of N. Richland Hills, Texas; CB Noel Ellis of New Orleans)

VANDERBILT

2013 verbal commitments: 22

Spotlight: Defensive tackle Jay Woods of Jackson, Ga., is a powerful body up front, who will be even better at the next level once he bulks up some. He shows good speed off of the line and can be disruptive in both the passing game and the running game, where he clogs gaps very well.
