Connor Shaw to have foot surgery
By Edward Aschoff
South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is going to have surgery.
After dealing with a foot injury for most of the second half of the season, Shaw will have the procedure Friday. It's unknown how much the surgery will affect Shaw during spring practice.
Shaw, a junior, sprained his foot in the win against Tennessee on Oct. 27 and had issues with his foot against Arkansas and Wofford. He missed South Carolina's win against Clemson, and had to sit out the majority of South Carolina's game-winning drive against Michigan in Tuesday's Outback Bowl because of his injury.
With Shaw being such a threat to run, having surgery should make him more comfortable running the football. He's a much more productive quarterback when he's a true threat to run and throw. Shaw also dealt with a shoulder injury all season, so no one will ever question his toughness. The hope is that he'll enter the 2013 season completely healthy and ready to be the guy for the Gamecocks. The plan is to get backup Dylan Thompson playing time regardless of Shaw's status, but having a healthier Shaw benefits the Gamecocks in the long run.
