SEC recruiting storylines: Aug. 15

By Derek Tyson

The college football season is quickly approaching, but there is still a lot of recruiting action happening around the SEC. Here is a closer look at some of the hot topics throughout the conference:

3-star ATH set to announce on Saturday

Three-star athlete Kevin Shorter (Newton, Texas/Newton) is set to announce his college decision on Saturday. The 6-foot, 188-pound athlete has offers from schools such as Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State, but it appears as though Arkansas may be the team to beat.  The Razorbacks currently have the No. 38-ranked class, but a commitment from Shorter could help their cause to move up. Arkansas is recruiting Shorter as a running back where as a junior he rushed for over 1,800 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Missouri lands 3-star wide receiver

The Tigers landed a commitment from three-star athlete Stepfawn Hughes (Fort Worth, Texas/Dunbar) on Tuesday. Hughes is the younger brother of Missouri junior wide receiver Darius White. The 5-foot-8, 167-pound athlete had offers from LSU, Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State. Missouri now has 18 commitments including 17 ranked three-stars or higher.

Missouri is recruiting Hughes as a wide receiver and he became the fourth receiver to pledge to the Tigers. Missouri isn't quite done at the position either. On Tuesday, the same day Hughes committed, the Tigers offered Gainesville (Fla.) High School wide receiver Kenric Young a scholarship. Young also has offers from UCF, USF, Purdue, N.C. State, Rutgers and Wisconsin among others.

Vols land junior college DT Lambert

Tennessee continued its impressive recruiting run by landing a commitment from junior college defensive tackle DaVonte Lambert (Milledgeville, Ga./Georgia Military) on Tuesday. Lambert chose the Vols over offers from Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Miami and West Virginia.

Tennessee now has four junior college commitments including wide receiver Kameel Jackson (Arlington, Texas/Blinn College), outside linebacker Chris Weatherd (Carrolton, Texas/Trinity Valley CC) and wide receiver Eric Lauderdale (Fayetteville, Ga./Saddleback College)

Gators have huge recruiting day

Florida jumped from No. 13 in the class rankings up to No. 8 this week due in large part by the Gators adding commitments from ESPN 300 prospects Chris Lammons (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation), Ermon Lane (Homestead, Fla./Homestead) and Quincy Wilson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./University School) all on Monday.  Lane is the No. 2-ranked wide receiver in the country.

The Gators also landed, Nolan Kelleher (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) on Saturday. With the addition of these four prospects, the Gators now have 15 verbal commitments including 10 ranked in the ESPN 300.

Under Armour All-America game update

There are currently 23 players, committed to SEC schools, who have committed to play in the Under Armour All-America game on Jan. 2, 2014 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Georgia defensive tackle commit Lamont Gaillard (Fayetville, N.C./Pine Forest), at No. 12, is the highest rated SEC commit playing in the game, but that will likely change with the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 prospects, Leonard Fournette and Cameron Robinson, likely staying in the SEC when they make their decisions.

Alabama leads the way with seven commits in the game followed by Georgia, Florida and LSU with three commits each.
