SEC recruiting storylines: Oct. 17

By Gerry Hamilton

Taking a look back at the week that was in SEC recruiting and looking ahead to future visits as teams build toward signing day:

Aggies could make big splash Saturday

Myles Garrett
Myles Garrett is set to announce his college decision. He's visiting Texas A&M this weekend, where his sister is a member of the track and field team.
Five-star defensive end and No. 7 overall Myles Garrett (Arlington, Texas/James Martin) is set to announce his decision on Saturday, the same day he will be in College Station for the Aggies' game against Auburn and a university function for his sister Brea Garrett, who is a member of the school's track and field team. Texas A&M is the odds on favorite to land the 6-foot-4, 247-pound Under Armour All-America selection. Garrett’s lone official visit was to College Station on Sept. 13. The Aggies' main competition could come from TCU, where a pair of former high school teammates currently play. Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State have also been under consideration.

Texas A&M has the No. 11 class in the RecruitingNation class rankings and are poised to jump into the top 10 if Garrett commits.

The Aggies will also host several Class of 2015 prospects Saturday for the Auburn game. Included on the list is ESPN Junior 300 No. 10 Daylon Mack (Gladewater, Texas/Gladewater) and No. 155 Jarrett Stidham (Stephenville, Texas/Stephenville). Mack is considered a Texas A&M lean and the 6-3, 183-pound Stidham is considering the Aggies, Baylor, Texas, Kentucky, Texas Tech and others.

Tennessee hosting former Florida signee, Alabama DE

The Tennessee Volunteers have attacked the junior colleges with terrific success in the 2014 class, and Butch Jones and his staff are not done yet. This weekend, a trio of the top juco prospects in the class will be making official visits to Knoxville. Defensive tackle and former Florida signee Jarran Reed (Goldsboro, N.C./East Mississippi Community College), former Alabama defensive end D.J. Pettway (Pensacola, Fla./East Mississippi Community College) and big-time offensive tackle Avery Gennesy (Southaven, Miss./East Mississippi Community College) will make official visits as the Vols look to add to a 26-man class that already features several junior college prospects.

The 6-4, 305-pound Reed signed with Florida in the 2013 class, but returned to East Mississippi Community College after not being admitted for the fall semester. Pettway, 6-3, 255-pound Pettway made an official visit to Ole Miss last weekend along with the 6-5, 315-pound Gennesy, who also traveled to Texas A&M on Sept. 6. Reed and Pettway are scheduled to be December graduates and plan to enroll in January, making their recruitments even more key for programs with immediate needs and opportunity.

Tennessee, which has the No. 3-ranked class nationally, has focused much of its efforts in-state, in Georgia and the junior college ranks in this class. The Vols have four of the top seven prospects from inside the Tennessee state lines committed, with No. 99 overall Josh Malone (Gallatin, Tenn./Station Camp) still very much in the picture.

Another SEC official for Garrett

No. 59 overall Clifton Garrett (Plainfield, Il./Plainfield South) has made official visits to Florida on Sept. 21 and Tennessee on Oct. 5, and this weekend will be back in SEC country at Ole Miss. The 6-2, 224-pound Garrett continues to be a lean to LSU, with the Gators, Vols and Rebels playing catch-up.

A second official visitor in Oxford this weekend will be ESPN 300 guard Jordan Sims (Birmingham, Ala./Homewood). The No. 257 ranked prospect overall also has an official visit scheduled to Auburn on Nov. 29.

Top Kentucky and Alabama target visiting South Bend

Matt Elam (Elizabethtown, Ky./John Hardin), a four-star defensive tackle and top target of Kentucky and Alabama, will make an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend. While the Fighting Irish will get their chance to change Elam’s recruitment, this one has been Alabama vs. Kentucky for a while now. Elam will make official visits to Kentucky on Dec. 13 and Alabama on Dec. 20 before announcing in January.

Alabama commitment visiting Notre Dame

Bo Scarbrough
Bo Scarbrough was an early commitment to Alabama, but plans on taking all his visits.
One of the many official visitors in South Bend, Ind., this weekend for the annual Notre Dame vs. USC game will be Alabama commit and No. 20 overall Bo Scarbrough (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy). The 6-2, 215-pound uber-athletic prospect made an official visit to Ole Miss last weekend. Florida and UCLA remain possibilities for official visits.

Frazier to make Auburn visit

ESPN 300 defensive tackle Josh Frazier (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) was scheduled to make an official visit to Alabama this weekend for the Crimson Tide’s game against Arkansas, but that visit was postponed and will possibly occur in December. The 6-4, 330-pound nose guard prospect, ranked No. 158 overall, will be in the state of Alabama in November when he make an official visit to Auburn on Thanksgiving weekend. Frazier made an official visit to Texas A&M Sept. 13 and a trio of unofficial trips to nearby Arkansas this season. Southern California remains a possibility for an official visit.

Five-star back on the road next weekend

Five-star defensive end and No. 4 overall Da'Shawn Hand (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) will make his second official visit next weekend, to Alabama for the Tennessee game. The 6-4, 262 -pound Hand made an official visit to Michigan in early September. Hand also will visit Florida on Nov. 6 before announcing his decision.
