Lutzenkirchen gets a tryout at H-back
By ESPN.com staff
Auburn fans wanting to see more of freshman tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen this season will get their wish in the Outback Bowl.
He’s going to shift over to H-back against Northwestern. It’s really out of necessity more than anything. Eric Smith is academically ineligible, and John Douglas was suspended following his DUI arrest.
But it also gives Lutzenkirchen a chance to show what he can do in more of a pass-catching role. That’s his strength, and when he played this season, he usually delivered.
In Gus Malzahn’s offense, the H-back is asked to do a lot of different things, but the 6-4, 260-pound Lutzenkirchen is versatile enough to play several different roles. He's gotten better as a blocker.
Two of Lutzenkirchen’s five catches this season went for touchdowns. He caught 72 passes as a high school senior in Marietta, Ga.
