"Yes! Yes! Yes! We got another punter!!!"
After starting 6-0, the Broncos finished the season on a 2-8 streak and missed the playoffs. Now, rather than addressing whatever must have gone wrong during their Week 7 bye week, the Broncos have opted instead for a somewhat more unconventional off-season strategy: They’ve decided to sign as many punters as possible.
The Denver Post is reporting that the Broncos have added an additional punter this week by signing A.J. Trapasso, an undrafted free-agent rookie who didn’t actually punt during the regular season. This follows last week’s signing of punter Britton Colquitt, another undrafted rookie. This can’t be good news for current Broncos punter Mitch Berger or the fans in Denver who were hoping that this off-season would be less punter-centric.
In all fairness to the Broncos, at least they’ve brought in two undrafted rookie punters with intrigue. Trapasso gained attention in the preseason when he blasted a punt into the enormous video board hanging above the field in the new Cowboys Stadium. And Colquitt, of course, is a member of the famous Punting Colquitts.
Although the Punting Colquitts are less famous than the Flying Wallendas, the Acting Barrymores, and the Kicking Gramaticas, they are no less remarkable. Britton Colquitt is joined in the NFL by his brother Dustin, the punter for the Chiefs. And these two Colquitts follow in the footsteps of their older brother Jimmy who punted for the Titans and dad Craig who won two Super Bowl rings punting for the Steelers.
For all of the other undrafted rookie punters out there, it may be wise to stay near your cell phones and answer any unrecognized calls from the 303 area code. Because, apparently, the Broncos have a plan.
