The Chicago White Sox are closing in on a contract agreement with free agent shortstop Omar Vizquel, who turns 43 next April. A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press the deal could be announced as soon as Monday. The 11-time Gold Glove winner is a lifetime .273 hitter who batted .266 in 62 games as a part-timer for Texas.

Los Angeles midfielder David Beckham said Friday he'll need an injection in his right ankle to reduce pain and allow him to play in Sunday night's MLS Cup final against Real Salt Lake. Beckham has a bone bruise in his ankle that's been bothering him for some time.

Despite freshman Tate Forcier starting the first 11 games this season, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez won't promise the starting quarterback job for next year. Speaking on WJR-AM (760) Friday, Rodriguez was asked whether he has to make a choice between Forcier and backup Denard Robinson. "I don't think so," Rodriguez said to host Mitch Albom. "What I want to do, and what our goal is, what I've told the players in recruiting is, we want to recruit competition at every position. We want two to three guys at every position who are truly competing for the job." Albom also asked Rodriguez whether he plans on going anywhere or if he thinks the university plans to have him go somewhere following this season. Rodriguez responded directly: "No."
