Butler Tops Syracuse, Heading to Elite 8
Gordon Hayward scored 17 points and the Bulldogs played solid defense throughout as Butler took down No. 1 seed Syracuse 63-59 Thursday. The Orange could not overcome a stifling Bulldogs defense, committing 18 turnovers in the game.
Kansas State Survives After Double OT
Kansas State is advancing but Xavier didn't go down without a fight. KSU guard Jacob Pullen hit a pair of three pointers in the 2nd overtime to give the Wildcats a lead they would not give up. Musketeers guard Terrell Holloway hit three straight FTs to force the first OT and his teammate, Jordan Crawford, hit a 35-foot jump shot at the end of OT to force the second. Pullen, Denis Clemente, and Curtis Kelly all scored at least 20 points for the Wildcats. Kansas State will face Butler next in the Elite 8.
Roethlisberger Security Video Taped Over
The security footage from the nightclub where Ben Roethlisberger allegedly assaulted a college student has been recorded over. According to Carl Cansino, the attorney for Capital City nightclub, the files are gone and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation did not gather any evidence from them. He also added that no cameras were pointed towards the restroom where the incident allegedly took place.
Hewitt Staying at GA Tech
Georgia Tech men's basketball coach Paul Hewitt announced Thursday he would be staying at the school. Hewitt, a New York native, Hewitt, a New York native, turned down an offer to coach St. John’s saying he and his family were comfortable in Atlanta and that he wanted to continue coaching the Yellow Jackets.
NHL Bans Headshots
The NHL and NHLPA have agreed to a new rule that would ban blind-side shots to the head. The rule is effective immediately and will run through the playoffs. After the season the sides will meet again to discuss making the rule permanent.
Shanahan Says Skins QB Battle is Open
Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday he will open the QB position to a competition. Incumbent starter, Jason Campbell, has been the starter since 2006 but the team brought in Rex Grossman to compete for the job. They are also reportedly interested in rookie Sam Bradford should he be available in the upcoming draft.
Yankees Name Hughes 5th Starter
The battle to backend the Yankees rotation is over and Phil Hughes is the winner. He was competing with 4 other pitchers for the spot but manager Joe Girardi said "an improved changeup" was what eventually tipped the scales to Hughes.
Robin Roberts to Drive Indy 500 Pace Car
Robin Roberts, the co-host of ABC's Good Morning America, will drive the pace car for the Indy 500 on May30. Roberts will become only the second woman ever to drive the car.
Rex Ryan Disappointed in Leon Washington
Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan said Thursday he is disappointed that RB Leon Washington isn't at the team's OTA's. Though the workouts are voluntary, Ryan indicated the rest of the team volunteered to be there and he hoped Washington would join them soon.
Liriano Leading Candidate for Twins 5th Spot
Without officially naming Francisco Liriano the 5th starter, manager Ron Gardenhire did said the lefty was far ahead of his competition. Gardenhire said the competition is still open, but that he and his staff have zeroed in on Liriano for the job.
Osi Battling Hip Injury
Giants DE Osi Umenyiora is apparently fighting through a painful hip injury. According to a person close to the situation, symptoms from a torn hip flexor he suffered in 2006 often flare up during spring workouts. This time they are particularly affecting him.
