This year, the umps have become front-page news, mostly for the blown calls. Last week ESPN The Magazine's Baseball Confidential conducted a survey of 100 MLB players, asking them to rate the umpires, among other hot topics discussed. Jim Joyce made headlines June 2 when his botched call at first base robbed Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game. The blown call didn't affect his favorable reputation with the players polled. Finishing a distant second behind Joyce was Tim McClelland. Joe West, who finished second to C.B. Bucknor, received the highest vote for the umpire with the quickest hook. 29% of the players gave the umpires an overall "B" grade and 77% of the players voted against replay on base calls.
