“That’s okay, Ryan. I’ll be in pinstripes soon enough. All in good time …”
Washington Nationals No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Harper was having a pleasant interview on a D.C. radio station this past week when the hosts asked who his favorite teams were. "If I'm rooting or somebody, it's the Dallas Cowboys,” said the teenage slugger. Asked why he pulled for “America’s Team,” the Las Vegas native replied "Because they were always a winner when I was growing up … I always like the best teams, so that's how that came across. And I love their uniforms. They're just a pretty team."
Perhaps half-jokingly, Harper's interviewers asked if he's also a Yankees fan. This was the rookie's opportunity to deny America’s (Baseball) Team, but much to the chagrin of the Nationals' growing fan base, he agreed. "I am," he said. "I'm a Washington Nationals fan, but I like the Yankees."
The rest of his sports allegiances read like a Who’s Who of successful and, shall we say, polarizing franchises. From the D.C. Sports Blog:
"'My basketball team? Lakers,' he said. Of course. As if there were any doubt.
"'I love UT,' he said.
"'Duke,' he said."
The team support questioning appears to have stopped there, but for Washington locals curious about Bryce’s other likes, we’ve "intercepted" (read: made up) the answers to a survey that fills out the rest of his professed loves:
Favorite Hockey Team: Was the 1980s Edmonton Oilers, now he's leaning towards the Penguins
Favorite English Premiership Soccer Team, If He Admitted He Liked Soccer: Manchester United
Favorite Cereal: Cheerios (standard, not Honey Nut)
Favorite Car: Ford F-150 (eat his dust, Chevy Silverado)
Favorite Musician: Elvis Presley (the thin version)
Favorite T.V. Show: "Two and A Half Men," a slight edge over "M*A*S*H" re-runs.
Favorite Movie: “Titanic.” Or it was “Titanic,” until “Avatar.”
Favorite Web Browser: Internet Explorer
Favorite Font: Courier (it's for his screenplay, "Start At The Top")
Favorite Nonmetallic Period 2 Element: Oxygen
We look forward to hearing about Bryce's opinion on books — once he gets around to finishing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
