We’ve officially reached the closest thing to a dead period the NFL has to offer these days as organized team activities are over and training camp has not yet arrived.
That means vacation time for the players, coaches and, yes, reporters. In the meantime, let’s get to know some of the lesser-known additions to the Rams roster: the rookie free agents.
College: Central Michigan
Weight: 200 pounds
Stat to know: Cunningham did a little bit of everything for the Chippewas and was extremely productive over the past three seasons. He started every game during those three years, compiling 294 tackles, four interceptions and four sacks.
Road to the roster: Of all the positions on the defense, safety might have the group that is least proven which could provide an opening for Cunningham. But it's not going to be easy because the Rams do have some young players they like even if they don't have a long history of production. T.J. McDonald and Rodney McLeod are expected to start the season and are in good shape to hold down two spots. Fourth-round pick Maurice Alexander is also a good bet to make the roster. The team has carried four or five safeties the past two years, which would leave some jobs up for grabs. There are plenty of options for another spot or two, though. Matt Daniels, Cody Davis and Christian Bryant also are hoping to land jobs.
