EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams are among the 50 most valuable franchises in sports, according to Forbes Magazine's annual franchise valuations.
Forbes recently compiled its list of the top 50 sports teams in the world based on their net worth. The magazine tabbed the Rams as holding a value of $875 million, which tied with the NBA's Boston Celtics for No. 45 overall.
The Forbes list includes teams from all over the world including the many lucrative soccer clubs overseas. In fact, the top three teams are all European soccer clubs with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United valued at $3.44 billion, $3.2 billion and $2.81 billion, respectively.
It's also noteworthy that the Rams aren't even owner Stan Kroenke's most valuable sports franchise. While his Arsenal soccer club isn't quite on the level of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Manchester United it did check in at No. 16 on the list with an estimated value of $1.331 billion. That number was buoyed further by Arsenal's recent agreement on a five-year, $50 million per year contract for sponsorship of the team's uniforms.
As for the Rams, their value of $875 million is subject to change as Forbes examines the value of the teams in major sports all over the world throughout the course of the year. Last year, the Rams made bigger gains in Forbes' values list than any other NFL team when they jumped from $780 million to the current $875 million price tag.
A big factor in that jump was Forbes' expectation that the Rams will sooner or later find themselves in a new, more profitable venue. Of course, there's nothing new or even anything on the horizon on that front, but the Rams lease at the Edward Jones Dome will expire at season's end.
The Rams rank 29th among the 30 NFL teams to make the list with only Jacksonville and Oakland not landing spots. Buffalo is the only other NFL team to come in at a value lower than the Rams.
Forbes released last year's updated values of NFL teams in mid-August so it's possible these numbers could change again soon and next year's list could take on a different look.
