No. 5: Whitfield will emerge at safety

Two years ago, it was determined Kodi Whitfield was too talented as a receiver for the Cardinal to utilize his redshirt.

Looking back, it probably wasn't the right decision. He made just two catches as a freshman in 2012 and didn't make a significant impact on special teams. He improved as a sophomore -- ranking fourth on the team with 170 yards receiving -- but with a deep receiving corps, Whitfield's prospects for an increased role next season weren't great.

With an open spot at safety and no obvious candidate to replace Ed Reynolds, who left early for the NFL, Whitfield made the switch to safety before spring practice began. In the first session, he didn't see many -- if any -- reps with the first team as he began the transition.

In the second session, that figures to change.

By moving Whitfield to safety, the coaching staff essentially made the determination he would be more valuable to the team on defense. Obviously, for that to happen he needs to be on the field. If they didn't believe he'd win the job -- or at least have a good chance at winning it -- they'd have left him on offense, where it was clear he'd have a role.

It made sense that Whitfield didn't rotate in with the first team during the first session, but now that he's had some time to feel out the new position, it's time to see if he's up to the task.

Prediction? He'll win the job.

Stanford will begin the second session of spring practice on March 31. The spring game is April 12.
