Stanford safety Delano Howell will miss Saturday's game against Washington because of an unspecified hand injury, according to a school spokesman.
He will be evaluated on a "weekly basis going forward."
This is a significant hit for the Stanford secondary. Howell is tied for third on the team in tackles (25) and tied for second in pass breakups (four). Devon Carrington, who has started three games this season, is the likely replacement.
Washington enters the game averaging 246 passing yards per game. Quarterback Keith Price, who is very good at buying time in the pocket and keeping plays alive, has completed almost 70 percent of his passes this season and has thrown 21 touchdowns to four interceptions.
Howell is considered the hardest hitter on the team and is one of Stanford's better, pure tacklers.
However, the Cardinal have shown this year to be a very deep team. We'll see if all of that playing time for backups in earlier blowouts pays off.
