STANFORD, Calif. -- In an important Pac-12 North showdown, No. 5 Stanford fended off No. 15 Washington to win 31-28 and extend the nation's second-longest winning streak to 13 games. Here's how it happened:
It was over when: The replay official determined the ball hit the ground on a 16-yard catch with 1:16 left, overturning a play that would have given the Huskies the ball at the Stanford 33. Instead, Stanford got the ball back, kneeled twice and escaped with its undefeated record intact.
Game ball goes to: Stanford WR Ty Montgomery. He returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and the big plays kept coming: His 39-yard touchdown reception near the end of the first half was Stanford's offensive play of the game; his 68-yard kickoff return at the end of the third set up Stanford's fourth touchdown; and he finished with 290 all-purpose yards. Montgomery also had three catches for 56 yards and two carries for 30 yards.
Stat of the game: Ten penalties, 97 yards against Washington. The most penalized team in the country coming in, Washington couldn't get out of its own way in the first half (eight for 64 yards) and it proved crucial.
What it means for Washington: Despite the loss, Washington showed it was deserving of its No. 15 ranking. After Stanford jumped out to a 10-0 lead, the Huskies, on the road, settled down and traded scores with the No. 5 team in the country. Take away the penalties, and Steve Sarkisian might have had his biggest win as a head coach. Washington outgained Stanford 489 yards to 279.
What it means for Stanford: The win reaffirmed the narrative that has followed the team throughout the season. Its physicality was on display (see: both third-quarter touchdown runs), there were big plays in all phases, and the Cardinal remained on a collision course with No. 2 Oregon on Nov. 7.
