Note: Oregon, Washington and UCLA are doing it with balance, as all three are in the Top 25 in the nation in rushing and passing. Arizona is all about the run. Oregon State and California and, to a lesser extent, Arizona State, are all about the pass.
Note: Oregon's visit to Washington matches the Pac-12's two best statistical defenses as well as two potent offenses. That's typical for the Ducks. It's a new thing for the Huskies. So who walks away validating its statistical rankings? It's also worth noting that the Bruins seem to be taking a step forward on defense in Year 2 under coach Jim Mora.
Note: Some coaches don't fret penalties -- Chip Kelly would shrug over these numbers. But it is notable that six Pac-12 teams are among the nation's most penalized teams. Are the teams the problem? Or the officiating?
Note: If Sankey puts up big numbers against Oregon in a Huskies' victory, he should earn his way onto the short-list of Heisman Trophy candidates. Carey is an interesting matchup Thursday with the USC defense -- as is Madden against the Wildcats' rejuvenated D.
Note: Can Cooks and Mannion keep up this pace? If so, Mannion could get some national hype and Cooks could win the Biletnikoff Award.
Random notes: UCLA is third in the nation in third-down conversion percentage on offense (.583 -- tied with Washington) and third in third-down conversion percentage on defense (.241)... Oregon is No. 8 in the nation in third-down conversion percentage defense at .261...Oregon State and Washington State play Saturday, and they rank No. 121 and No. 122 in the nation in rushing... Utah ranks third in the nation with 3.6 sacks per game. Stanford, which visits Utah on Saturday, yields just one sack per game... Colorado's true freshman LB Addison Gillam ranks fourth in the nation with 12 tackles per game.
