Florida and Texas are in rare territory

Last year at this time, it appeared that the Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns might be headed for a showdown for the national championship. Florida was ranked No. 1 in both the AP Poll and BCS Standings. Texas was third in both. Had Florida won the SEC Championship Game over Alabama (No. 2 in both rankings), these teams would have met in Pasadena.

A year later, not only is a national championship out of the question, but these teams would be happy just to be ranked at all.

This week marks the first AP Poll since September 4, 1990 that doesn’t feature either Florida or Texas. That’s a span of 341 consecutive weeks.

In that same poll in September 1990, the Miami Hurricanes were ranked No. 1, while Notre Dame came in at No. 2. Coincidentally, the No. 3 team that week was Auburn. The Tigers occupy that same spot this week in the AP Poll.
