Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mat Latos threw 24 consecutive strikes to Milwaukee Brewers hitters at one point during the first four innings on Monday.

Despite seeing strike after strike after strike, the Brewers couldn't manage a single hit during that span.

It was 1-2-3 in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. In the 2nd inning, it took nine pitches. In the 3rd inning, it took eight pitches. In the 4th, Latos needed just six pitches.

That's how the night went for Latos. He went the distance, allowing just four hits and one run, and struck out 13 batters while allowing just two walks.

Latos is the fourth pitcher this season to have a complete game with at least 13 strikeouts, joining Dan Haren, Matt Cain (in his perfect game) and R.A. Dickey.

The last Reds pitcher with at least 13 strikeouts in a complete game was Ron Villone against the Cardinals in 2000. The last Reds pitcher to do it in Cincinnati was Tim Belcher against the Padres in 1992.

For Latos, it was his second career complete game and his first with the Reds. He had never struck out 13 batters in a game before Monday.

Latos has now won six straight decisions, tying the longest streak of his career (he won six straight in 2010).

Since the Elias Sports Bureau began tracking pitch data in 2000, no Reds pitcher has thrown more consecutive strikes in a game than the 24 Latos threw.

How did Latos mow down the Brewers hitters?

• Latos threw a career-high 43 sliders and induced a career-best 16 swings-and-misses on the pitch. The 16 swings-and-misses are the most any pitcher has had on sliders in a game this season.

• Latos also had eight swings-and-misses on his fastball, giving him a career-best total of 24. The 24 swings-and-misses are the fourth-most by any pitcher this season and the most by a Reds starter in the last four seasons.

• Latos finished with a career-high 13 strikeouts, all of which came on fastballs (6) or sliders (7). Seven of his strikeouts were on three pitches, tied for the most three-pitch strikeouts by any starter this season.

• Latos pounded his fastball in the zone and used his slider as a chase pitch. He threw 35 of his 49 fastballs (71 percent) in the strike zone, the highest percentage of his career. He threw just 10 of his 43 sliders (23 percent) in the zone but Brewers hitters chased an additional 17 of them. Nine of the 12 outs he recorded on his slider, including all seven strikeouts, were out of the zone.
