Saturday marked the release of the AP Preseason College Football Poll, and the Alabama Crimson Tide begin the season as the nation’s No. 1 team, garnering 58 of a possible 60 first-place votes. It’s tied for the highest percentage of first-place votes received in a preseason poll since the poll began in 1950 (2009 Florida Gators).

This season marks the fourth time in school history that Alabama was named the preseason AP No. 1 (also 2010, 1978 and 1966). However, 1978 was the only such season in which the Tide went on to finish the season No. 1. The last time any preseason AP No. 1 finished the season atop the AP poll was USC in 2004.

The spot atop the 2013 preseason AP poll marks the sixth straight season that Alabama has reached No. 1. Since the AP poll was first released in 1936, only Miami (Fla.) from 1986 to 1992 has accomplished the feat.

However, Nick Saban is the first head coach to reach No. 1 in the AP poll in six straight seasons because Miami’s streak spanned two head coaches -- Jimmy Johnson (1986-88) and Dennis Erickson (1989-92).

The Ohio State Buckeyes are No. 2 in the preseason AP poll for the seventh time in school history and for the first time since 2010. Including games later vacated, the Buckeyes won at least 10 games and finished in the AP Top 10 the past five seasons in which they were ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll. In each of those five seasons, they also reached the Rose, Fiesta, or Sugar Bowls. In all, Ohio State is appearing in its 25th straight preseason AP poll, the longest active streak in the FBS.

The Oregon Ducks begin their first season of the post-Chip Kelly era at No. 3, tied for their highest preseason AP ranking in school history (also 2011). Oregon has been ranked in the preseason top 5 each of the past three seasons. Before 2011, the Ducks had one preseason top 10 ranking in their history (seventh in 2001).

Remaining top 10

No. 4 Stanford Cardinal -- Highest preseason AP ranking in school history and third straight season the Cardinal appear in the preseason AP poll. It’s the longest such streak by Stanford since 1979-81, when John Elway was under center.

No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs -- Ranked in preseason AP top 5 for the third time in school history and for the first time since 2008 (No. 1). In 10 previous preseason top 10s, the Bulldogs' highest finish in the poll was third, in 2002.

No. 6 South Carolina Gamecocks -- Highest preseason AP ranking in school history. Their previous high was last season, when the Gamecocks were ranked No. 9.

No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies -- Highest preseason rank since 1999 (also seventh). The Aggies finished that season 8-4 and were shut out by Penn State in the Alamo Bowl.

No. 8 Clemson Tigers -- Ranked in preseason AP Top 10 for just the second time in the past 22 seasons. The No. 8 preseason ranking is the highest by the Tigers since 1988 (fourth).

No. 9 Louisville Cardinals -- Highest preseason ranking in school history. The Cardinals have now appeared in five preseason AP polls since 2005 after appearing just once prior to that season.

No. 10 Florida Gators -- Appeared in 10 straight and 24 of the past 25 preseason AP polls. In 19 of those 24 polls, the Gators have been ranked in the top 10.
