The Oakland Athletics had the second-most wins in the American League in 2013, repeating as AL West champions. They did so despite having the third-smallest Opening Day payroll in the AL. General manager Billy Beane outmaneuvered free-spending division rivals in the Rangers and Angels by being very active on the trade market, exchanging prospects for players who were on the verge of breaking out in the majors.
