Derek Jeter is hitting .340 in 12 games against the Red Sox this season. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees play the middle game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium tonight (7 ET on ESPN/WatchESPN). Here are some storylines to keep an eye on.

Starting Pitchers

Anthony Ranaudo will start for the Red Sox after being called up Tuesday (he’ll stay in the Red Sox six-man rotation for the rest of the season).

In his first big league start (August 1), Ranaudo went six innings while allowing four hits, two runs (both earned), four walks and two strikeouts as he earned the win over the Yankees in Boston.

Ranaudo has won each of his first three career starts. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no Red Sox pitcher has won each of his first four career starts since Don Schwall began 5-0 in five starts in 1961.

Yankees Opening Day Rotation

Hiroki Kuroda will take the mound for the Yankees. He’s been essentially the only constant in a tumultuous year for New York’s starting rotation.

Kuroda has come to lean on his splitter more and more thoughout the years and he’s doing so with great effectiveness.

For the fifth straight year, he's increased the use of his splitter, from 12 percent in 2010 to 26 percent so far this season. In addition, Kuroda is allowing the opposition to hit only .176 in at-bats ending with his splitter this season.

The Captain’s last hurrah

Derek Jeter is closing in on the end of his career (if the Yankees don’t make the playoffs, his last games will be at Fenway Park September 26-28).
