More bad news for the Big East Conference
By Paul Kinney
How bad of a year has it been for the Big East?
Consider that we’re in Week 11 and the Big East is the only BCS-AQ conference WITHOUT a bowl-eligible team. That’s amazing when you look at the other conferences and how many teams are already bowl-eligible.
NOTE: USC has six wins, but is ineligible for postseason play
And it’s not just the conferences that get automatic BCS bids that are outdoing the Big East. The only other conference in the FBS without a bowl eligible team is the Sun Belt, which is led by a 5-3 Troy team that visits FIU on Saturday.
But the four remaining non-AQ conferences all have at least four bowl eligible teams, led by the MAC with five. And of the three independent teams, Navy is already bowl-eligible while Army needs just one more win to get there.
All in all, there are 48 teams already bowl-eligible -- including 18 among independents and non-AQ conference teams -- and none of them reside in the Big East, a conference that is guaranteed to have a team play in a big-time bowl game in January.
