Favre, Romo Under Center of Attention
By Vince Masi
Our weekly look at quarterbacks who are under the center of attention. This week, the focus falls on the four quarterbacks whose teams had a bye last week.
He returns after the bye week by facing the New York Jets, the team he played for in 2008. He also gets to throw to Randy Moss, who the Vikings traded for on Wednesday. In four career games against the Jets, Favre has a 66.7 career passer rating, his third-worst rating against any team. The last time Favre was in the Meadowlands area was the 2008 season finale and it didn't end pretty. Favre's last two pass attempts were an interception and an illegal forward pass to Jerricho Cotchery.
But something has to give with Favre having last week to rest. In the last nine seasons, in the game after his bye week, Favre is 8-1, completing 68 pct of his passes for more than 242 yards per game, with nearly three times as many TD as Int and a passer rating over 100.
The Tennessee Titans have to be concerned. They are facing Romo off a bye week, which has spelled doom for the opposition. He is 3-0 in games following a bye and has put a stamp on all three games.
• 2007 Week 8 at Philadelphia Eagles
Romo throws for 324 yards and three touchdowns with one interception as the Dallas Cowboys thumped the Eagles on the road 38-21.
• 2008 Week 11 at Washington Redskins
Romo didn't put up the gaudy numbers -- he threw for 198 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions -- but the touchdown was the game-winner, a 25-yard strike to Martellus Bennett near the midway point of the fourth quarter as the Cowboys hung on for a 14-10 win.
• 2009 Week 7 vs Atlanta Falcons
Romo threw two of his three touchdowns passes during the Cowboys 17-point second quarter. He would finish with 311 yards passing with three touchdowns in the Cowboys 37-21 win.
Freeman hopes to extend his road winning streak to four straight starts when his Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to play the Cincinnati Bengals. He has been handling the blitz fairly well and is at least making plays. On plays when he faces five or more rushers, Freeman is averaging 9.2 yards per pass attempt. The only one with a higher rating among QB with at least 20 attempts this season is Tom Brady at 11.08.
If Cassel leads the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the Indianapolis Colts, he will be 4-0 after starting last year 0-4. He would also guide the Chiefs to their third 4-0 start in team history and first since 2003. The first time the Chiefs started a season at least 4-0 was in 1996. Who was the Chiefs starting QB that year? If you guessed Steve Bono, you would be correct.
