Rays rally wrecks Rangers

By ESPN Stats & Info

The Tampa Bay Rays stave off elimination as they rally to defeat the Texas Rangers 6-3 in Game 3 of the ALDS in Arlington. The Rays snapped their five-game postseason losing streak despite stranding 11 baserunners. Carlos Pena drove in three runs with a game-tying RBI single in the eight inning and his fourth career postseason homer in the ninth, while Carl Crawford added a solo shot in the ninth to lead the Rays to the victory. Pena's single was the the latest the Rays have ever had a game-tying RBI in their brief postseason history.

Tampa Bay entered the eighth inning down 2-1 and on the brink of being swept out of the first round. The offense had been silent through the first 25 innings of the series, hitting just .146 with two RBI and one home run....but their bats finally woke up in the final two frames of the game, as the Rays went 6-for-12 at the plate in the eighth and ninth inning combined, scoring five runs and hitting two longballs to force a Game 4 on Sunday.

For the Rangers, Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz both went deep, becoming the second and third players to hit multiple postseason home runs in their Rangers career (Juan Gonzalez leads with six). Darren Oliver took the loss in relief, his second career postseason loss and first since October 4, 1996 in the ALDS against the Yankees. Neftali Feliz, who entered in the eighth inning to preserve a 2-2 tie allowed a go-ahead single to John Jaso and then a homer to the lefty Carl Crawford in the ninth inning. Feliz had given up only one home run in 131 at-bats against left-handed hitters during the regular season.

The Rays and Rangers continue their series Sunday at 1 ET with Wade Davis on the bump for Tampa Bay and Tommy Hunter slated to take the mound for Texas.
