The Florida Marlins' Adalberto Mendez allowed one hit in six innings in his major-league debut Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. In the top of the seventh, Mendez picked up his first career hit, only to come up lame running to first base. He left the game with a strained right quad.
Misery loves company, so here are some other notable injuries suffered by pitchers while running the bases:
June 26, 2010: The Boston Red Sox's Clay Buchholz, who has been used as a pinch-runner in the past, hyperextended his left knee at San Francisco running between first and second. He wound up on the disabled list and didn't pitch again until July 21.
June 15, 2008: The New York Yankees were at the Houston Astros when Chien-Ming Wang rounded third base and scored; however, he came up lame on his right foot and was diagnosed with a torn Lisfranc ligament of the right foot and a partial tear of the peroneus longus of the right foot. He did not pitch the rest of the season.
Aug. 31, 2002: Mark Prior strained a hamstring against the Cardinals while running the bases and missed the rest of a doomed season. Then on July 11, 2003, Prior -- again while running the bases -- collided with the Atlanta Braves Marcus Giles. He missed three starts but came back and pitched fairly well.
For the 32nd time this season, the Toronto Blue Jays hit at least three home runs in a game. Entering play Monday, no other team had more than 20 such games.
The Baltimore Orioles have the worst record in the American League, 52-86. But following their 4-3 win over the Yankees, they are an AL-best 25-18 in one-run games, including 8-2 under Buck Showalter.
The Chicago Cubs Carlos Marmol recorded his 49th career save of at least one inning pitched, but it was just the fourth in which he failed to record a strikeout.
The Washington Nationals Danny Espinosa's grand slam was the 11th allowed this season by the New York Mets. The 11 are a Mets single-season record and the most allowed by a National League team since the 2000 San Diego Padres allowed 11.
