What would it take for Dunn to hit .200?

Adam Dunn is hitting .165. He's 55-for-334 (including a remarkable 3-for-78 against lefties) and is about to reach 400 plate appearances. How rare is this? Since 1920, only 33 players have had 400 plate appearances and hit under .200 -- "led" by Dal Maxvill's .175 mark for the 1969 Cardinals. Carlos Pena and Mark Reynolds both achieved this dubious accomplishment last season.

Dunn says he's going to change his offseason routine this winter (probably a good idea), but that won't help him this year. Does he have a shot at reaching .200? The White Sox have 48 games remaining. Let's say Dunn plays 45 games (Ozzie Guillen seems determined to keep him in the lineup) and averaged 3.5 at-bats per game. That's about 150 more at-bats. Here's what his final average would be given various batting averages the rest of the season:
  • .233 (35-for-150): .186
  • .253 (38-for-150): .192
  • .273 (41-for-150): .198
  • .280 (42-for-150): .200

So, roughly estimating, Dunn needs to hit about .280 the rest of the year to reach .200. Good luck, Adam!
