Hey, did you hear? We're getting a new commissioner!

Well, in 2013. Maybe.
According to sources, the 75-year-old Selig told the group of owners he will step down in 2012 in order to pursue other interests while he's still able, the newspaper reported.

Selig, reached at his Milwaukee office on Wednesday, would not discuss his conversations with the owners but said he plans to stay on the job for three more seasons, according to the report.

I'm afraid this falls under the heading of "Call me when you've got some real news."

For one thing, three seasons is a long time.

When baseball's owners (including Selig) forced Commissioner Fay Vincent out of office in 1992, Selig was elected chairman of the owners' executive council. In effect, he was the interim (or acting) commissioner (though it took a while for MLB to refer to him as such). Upon assuming the position, he told his wife he'd have his new job for "two to four months."

Five years later, Murray Chass wrote:
The owners have not moved full speed ahead in their quest for a new commissioner. Despite appearances to the contrary, though, Selig said the search committee, in conjunction with a head-hunting firm, has been busy.

"It's a very serious search," he said. "I believe we ought to have something done by the end of the year. It's always tough putting a timetable on it, but I think by the end of the year."

That was 12 years and three months ago.

So you'll pardon me, I hope, for guessing that a lot -- or rather, absolutely nothing -- might happen between now and 2013.
