Podcast: Playoff races and Power Rankings

9/19/2011

When Mark Simon and I left Friday’s Baseball Today podcast all we asked for was a few more pennant races ... and we got 'em! Thus, the Rays and Red Sox and Cardinals and much more were topics on Monday’s Baseball Today podcast, along with ...

1. Good for the Rays for making the AL wild card race interesting, but let’s be serious ... is there reason for Red Sox Nation to worry?

2. The Tigers just keep on winning, but it’s not simply pending Cy Young winner Justin Verlander on this pitching staff ... this is a team that could go far.

3. Meanwhile, what a fall from grace for the Twins. Their lineup is sad as both Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are shutting things down. What should we expect next season?

4. Who’s worse, the Twins or Astros? There was plenty of Astros talk Monday, mainly about some of the great days in the past, from Cesar Cedeno to J.R. Richard and more.

5. In the NL, the Cardinals still have much work to do, but at least we’re still talking about them. Same for the Giants. But did either of those teams make our top 10 in the Power Rankings?

Plus: Excellent emails, the AL MVP race, hitting three home runs off the same pitcher, more Mount Rushmore and Evan Longoria on a packed Monday Baseball Today podcast!
