Graham Womack runs a site called "Baseball Past and Present" and he recently polled over 600 baseball people, writers and bloggers to vote on their all-time baseball dream team: Nine players, position-by-position. It was a fun project and I wanted to give Graham a little pub.
Anyway, check out the link as Graham commissioned some cool artwork and had different writers contribute short essays on each player (including a couple of our SweetSpot network writers). Anyway, here's the dream team:
P -- Walter Johnson
C -- Johnny Bench
1B -- Lou Gehrig
2B -- Rogers Hornsby
3B -- Mike Schmidt
SS -- Honus Wagner
LF -- Ted Williams
CF -- Willie Mays
RF -- Babe Ruth
No surprises as that's pretty much the consensus best team ever, depending on how you feel about Barry Bonds. None of the votes were all that close -- Johnson outpolled Sandy Koufax 159 to 83 in the closest vote. As always, baseball fans revere the past, so you end up with six of nine players who began their careers before World War II. That's a discussion for another time, I suppose.
